When Is a Ladder Game Useful?
A ladder game shines when you need to assign different results to several people all at once, and fairly. No repeating like rock-paper-scissors, no props like drawing lots. Here are the most common ways people use it at dinners, team projects, and get-togethers. Curious how it works? Read the ladder game guide first.
Deciding Penalties at a Gathering
The most common use. Make one vertical line per person, put "Penalty!" in one (or a few) of the bottom result boxes and "Safe" in the rest. Everyone taps their own number to see who got picked, with no arguments. Write the actual penalty (sing a song, buy the next round) in the box to make it more fun.
Splitting Into Teams
For two teams, fill the result boxes half with "Team A" and half with "Team B." For three teams, distribute "Team 1 / 2 / 3" to match your headcount. Since each number maps to exactly one result, the split comes out to the exact sizes you set: no lopsided teams. Great for class matches, game sides, and group assignments.
Who Pays (Lunch or Coffee)
To decide "who's treating today," put "Pays!" in one result box and leave the rest blank. It's settled in one pass even with a big group, and because the path is visible, there's no "why me?" grumbling afterward. Works the same for coffee runs, meal tabs, and delivery fees.
Cleanup Duty & Presentation Order
To set an order, put "1st, 2nd, 3rd…" in the result boxes and each number gets a random position. Especially handy for situations where turn order causes friction: cleanup duty, presentation order, play order, appointment order. Every round reshuffles, so no more "why am I always first?"
Pairings, Seats & Rooms
- Gift exchange: Put names in the result boxes to pair up a Secret Santa at random.
- Seating: Fill result boxes with seat numbers to assign seats fairly.
- Room assignments: Put room numbers as results to split a trip group in one go.
- Role split: Write roles like presenter, note-taker, or lead into the result boxes.
Tips for Keeping It Fair
- Agree on and enter all result boxes before running the ladder. Changing them after seeing a result breaks the fairness.
- Use "Reveal All" to show every path at once so no one has doubts.
- Want a redo? Tap "Reshuffle" for a new ladder. The same ladder always gives the same result.
- Supports 2–6 players. For bigger groups, bundle people into teams.
FAQ
- How do I set a penalty? Put "Penalty!" in one result box and "Safe" in the rest, then have everyone tap their number. You can write the actual penalty in the box.
- Can I split teams into exact halves? Yes. Pre-fill the result boxes like "Team A/Team B" to the sizes you want and it splits accordingly.
- How many players are supported? 2 to 6. For more, group people into teams and run it by team.
- Can the result be rigged? No. Rungs are generated randomly each time, so the outcome isn't known until the ladder is drawn.
- Do I need to install or sign up? No. It's free right in the browser.
