Korean Traditional Games

The history, culture, and rules of Yut Nori and Alkkagi

What Are Korean Traditional Games?

Korea's traditional games are a play culture passed down for centuries through holidays and village life. Among them, Yut Nori and Alkkagi stand out because the whole family can enjoy them with almost no equipment. Here's the history and rules of both, plus how to play them free online.

Yut Nori: Do, Gae, Geol, Yut, Mo

Yut Nori is played by throwing four wooden sticks and moving your pieces by the pattern that lands (Do, Gae, Geol, Yut, Mo); the side that brings all four pieces home first wins. Said to date back to the Three Kingdoms era, it's the classic holiday game families gather around, especially at Lunar New Year.

  • Do (1 step): one stick lands flat-side up
  • Gae (2 steps): two flat-side up
  • Geol (3 steps): three flat-side up
  • Yut (4 steps): all four flat-side up, throw again
  • Mo (5 steps): all four round-side up, throw again

Shortcuts, capturing opponent pieces, and stacking your own to move together decide the game. Full rules and strategy are in the Yut Nori guide.

Alkkagi: Flicking Go Stones

Alkkagi is played on a Go board by flicking your own stones with a finger to knock the opponent's stones off the board. It grew naturally from kids playing with Go stones beside the adults' games. The rules are simple, but it feels satisfying. Power control and angles are everything, so grown-ups get hooked too.

  • Take turns flicking one of your stones.
  • Push an opponent's stone off the board to remove it.
  • If your own stone flies off, you lose that stone instead.
  • Knock off all the opponent's stones to win.

Controls and angle tips are in the Alkkagi guide.

Games for the Holidays

At Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok, families still gather for a round of Yut Nori. Splitting into teams, cheering, and erupting when a Yut or Mo lands: those moments are the warmth of the holidays. Today families far apart can play the same game on separate screens, carrying the tradition forward in a new way.
